How Home Insulation Can Cut Your Energy Bills

While any home that was built in the last few years most likely has good insulation, double glazing, and efficient heating systems, it is not uncommon for our trained Energy Auditors to find deficiencies in the insulation. These deficiencies include, voids around wiring junction boxes, along the floor joist or even missed areas of insulation. Properties that were built even just a few decades ago can have many more insulation defects. In addition to voids and missed areas, there may be an insufficient amount of insulation in attics, walls and crawlspaces. If you live in a property that is not well insulated, you probably spend a lot of money on heating during the winter months and have to put up with uncomfortable drafts even during milder seasons.

Home insulation could save you a fortune on your energy bills and make your home a lot more comfortable to live in. It would also go a long way towards cutting down your carbon footprint. If you are environmentally conscious, then insulation is an important investment.

Areas to Insulate in your Home

There are a few areas of your home where insulation is important. The most obvious is your attic. It is common knowledge that heat rises and having blown-in cellulose or fiberglass reduces the voids around wires and junction boxes and also stops the thermal breaks around the floor joists in the attic.

Blown cellulose insulation also helps to stop air leakage, which in turn will help to stop heat loss into the attic and out through your roof. It’s also a good idea to insulate any crawlspaces in your home because these are the most common areas where heat escapes and cold air easily migrates into your heated living space.

Insulating your sidewalls using what is often referred to as sidewall insulation is another simple, affordable and rapid fix for cold and drafty homes.
